EV battery testing tool
Crystal Instruments

Crystal Instruments will present the Spider-81, which utilizes the Spider-CAN (CANbus) to monitor electrical signals sent from automotive components. The Spider-81 vibration controller combined with a CANbus adaptor can read and respond to CANbus signals sent from any electric automotive component, and send real-time CANbus message feedback during the test. This is not only an advantage for testing the component itself, but also highlights how the components’ internal controls function under testing.

Monitoring CANbus signals during a test is not a new idea. However, CANbus signal monitoring while running a vibration test is a recent development driven by smart electric vehicle battery designs featuring internal controls for temperature regulation, voltage monitoring and charge capacity.

One example is a battery test with an overheat condition. The Spider-81 vibration controller uses CANbus signals to stop or lower the vibration level if a battery is registering an overheat condition. Crystal Instruments’ vibration controllers not only register such readings but can also react by lowering the vibration level, sending an emailed alert or stopping the test altogether.
