One-stop testing service for green mobility
TÜV Süd

New-energy vehicles (NEV) are electric vehicles powered by batteries or H2 fuel cells, which help to reduce emissions. However, they also challenge component and product safety. Suppliers and manufacturers can benefit from TÜV Süd’s holistic testing services.

China plans to ban traditional combustion engines by 2035. Germany is extending its innovation premium for electric vehicles until the end of 2022. In the USA, extensive subsidies are to flow into e-mobility with an economic stimulus package. NEVs are a vital building block for greater climate protection. One of the most important components is the high-voltage battery, the safety of which is already being tested during development. In addition to production facilities, the focus is on components such as motors or fuel cells, as well as autonomous driving systems and proof of conformity. TÜV Süd offers manufacturers and suppliers worldwide complete services and laboratory capacities in this field.

Hydrogen test laboratory in Garching, Germany
To meet the growing demand from the automotive industry, TÜV Süd is focusing on testing fuel cell systems and high-pressure hydrogen gas components. The new laboratory in Garching offers all capabilities necessary to assess the suitability and safety of components and systems for hydrogen. At the laboratory, test items undergo testing for their resistance to pressure cycles and leak tightness as well as their behavior in throughflow mode or in the event of overpressure or bursting. TÜV Süd’s experts also examine permeation and fluid compatibility. Hydraulic testing, environmental simulation and testing of electromagnetic compatibility are available in other TÜV Süd test laboratories.

A single source for gaseous and liquid hydrogen
What makes the new test laboratory so special is not only the cutting-edge equipment on offer but also the possibility of testing the suitability of all types of materials and components for use with both gaseous and liquid hydrogen and across all industries. This includes components of stationary fuel cells, power stations and industrial plants as well as those of vehicle tanks and mobile fuel cells.

Key pilot customers are a major gasket manufacturer, a leading supplier of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) and one of the largest automotive suppliers. The laboratory in Garching is one of the few facilities in the world to offer cost-efficient, reliable, high-quality qualification and benchmark testing for metals and non-metals. Analysis of the hydrogen compatibility and permeation of materials is one of the focal areas of the new TÜV Süd laboratory. Component testing in the lead-up to type approval and certification also forms part of the laboratory’s service portfolio.

TÜV Süd’s experts support companies from design validation and development through material selection and qualification to type approval and certification. Their knowledge of all country-specific relevant standards and guidelines ensures successful national and international market access for NEV technologies.
