Catapult for medium-mass components
Encopim SL - Stand: 8338

The Small CATapults (SCAT) is the result of a partnership between Encopim and Instron and aims to provide a powerful and cost-efficient crash simulation system particularly suitable for testing of compact, low- to medium-mass components such as seats, seatbelts, child restraints and batteries. It is designed to reproduce both complex vehicle pulses and to facilitate regulatory standard tests like ECE R17-A9, R16-A8, R44-A7, R100-A8 or EuroNCAP 3.1.

The system is able to produce nominal forces up to 800kN and speeds up to 80km/h (500mph) thanks to the novel concept of taking the energy directly from the expansion of the compressed air in the cylinder. A high-frequency response servohydraulic brake unit acts on the ram to regulate the driving force and thus accurately reproduce the acceleration pulse in the sled which is moving on the rails. This system is equipped with many different modules to ensure safety of staff, rig and specimens. Moreover, in contrast to other larger crash simulation systems, SCAT does not require a special foundation, thus minimizing civil work costs and commissioning time.
