Reducing test chambers’ global warming impact
Weiss Technik North America

Every year, the environmental impact of cars decreases, so the climatic chambers used to develop them should surely follow suit. Weiss Technik is therefore changing its test chamber refrigerant from R-404A to R-449A. It is doing this ahead of the EU regulations that will ban all refrigerants of over 2,500GWP (global warming potential). The company says that the new refrigerant has a GWP of just 1,397 yet boasts the same performance and stability. All test chambers produced in Europe and Asia will use the new R-449A, while those produced in North America will have it as an option.

The change of refrigerant is part of the Weiss Low GWP – Energy – Efficiency – Footprint (LEEF) program. This package promises up to 40% energy savings, up to a 70% improvement in temperature and humidity accuracy, and up to 60% faster temperature pull-down rates, but also reduces the carbon footprint of environmental test labs.
