Using kurtosis control to accelerate automotive structural testing

Leo Zhang
China country manager
Vibration Research Corporation
CHINA
Structural testing using controlled random excitation is a long-accepted method of finding design and assembly flaws. Kurtosis control allows engineers to conduct such tests in a fraction of the time required for a Gaussian drive signal to precipitate failures. However, engineers must correctly implement the kurtosis control, which prompts a discussion about methods for selecting a transition frequency and implementing effective control. This presentation defines kurtosis and discusses the value of adding kurtosis control to a test profile. It introduces the Kurtosion software: a method of kurtosis control that adjusts kurtosis levels while maintaining test profile and spectrum attributes.

What the audience will learn

  • That the kurtosis of random vibration defines
  • Random, high-peak accelerations are present in real-world data, so adding kurtosis creates a more realistic test than a Gaussian test
  • Increasing kurtosis concentrates test energy to the peak accelerations, causing more damage across all frequencies and ensuring a quicker failure
  • Standards such as IEC 60068-2-64:2019 and GB/T 2423.56-2023 include non-Gaussian or kurtosis control methods
