Magnetic sensors for valvetrain measurement
Sensitec - Automotive Testing Expo Europe Stand 1708

According to expo exhibitor Sensitec, the magnetoresistive measurement principle has great potential applied in test benches, and in valvetrain analysis in fired combustion engines. In particular, the company’s valvetrain measurement system (VTMS) is said to provide vehicle developers with new measurement opportunities in the testing of combustion engines.
The modern GMR sensors combined with powerful evaluation electronics handle highly complex measurement tasks easily and effectively. The VTMS consists of a sensor with a cable that is either 1m or 1.5m in length, an amplifier unit plus evaluation unit with user software. A typical application of the technology is valve lift measurement in fired combustion engines. Until now, dynamic valve measurement was performed using Laser Doppler vibrometers on electrically driven cylinder heads. Sensitec’s GMR sensor solutions can be used for direct valve measurement in a fired engine, enabling extremely accurate and reliable analysis under real operating conditions.
